AI search agency vs traditional SEO agency
An SEO agency works on rankings and clicks; an AI search agency works on how AI answers describe you. Compare them on evidence and scope, not labels.
A traditional SEO agency works on how your pages rank and get clicked in search results. An AI search agency works on how AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI answers, and in China Doubao, Yuanbao, Kimi and DeepSeek — mention, recommend and describe your brand. Both build on the same foundation of crawlable, accurate content, but they report different metrics, and a label alone tells you nothing. Compare agencies on what they measure, what evidence they hand over and what they refuse to promise.
The work an AI search agency does is usually called generative engine optimization (GEO), LLM SEO or AI search optimization. For how Moments works as an AI SEO agency, see its service page.
Side by side
| Dimension | Traditional SEO agency | AI search agency |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Higher rankings and more organic clicks | Accurate mentions and recommendations inside AI answers |
| Core metrics | Rank, impressions, clicks, organic traffic | Mention rate, first-recommendation rate, description accuracy |
| Research input | Keyword lists and search volume | A fixed question set phrased the way buyers ask AI assistants |
| Evidence of results | Rank trackers and search console reports | Archived raw answers with date, platform and citations, re-tested on a cycle |
| Unit of work | Individual pages and site structure | The brand’s description across your site and third-party sources |
| Typical levers | Technical fixes, content targeting, links | Extractable facts, entity consistency, citation sources, third-party evidence |
| What it can’t promise | A guaranteed #1 ranking | A guaranteed position in an AI answer |
| Where they overlap | Crawlability, structured data, useful accurate content, trust signals | The same |
Where the overlap is real
A good SEO agency already does part of the AI search job. Google’s own guidance builds its generative search features on existing search fundamentals and requires no special AI markup. Accessible pages, sound structured data, clear authorship and useful content help in both channels. If your site has technical problems, fixing them is shared work, and you should not pay for it twice.
Where the work diverges
The difference shows up in three places.
- Measurement. A rank tracker cannot tell you what ChatGPT says about you. AI search work starts by running real buyer questions on each platform, archiving the raw answers and computing rates from them. Each platform retrieves and cites differently, so results are recorded per platform rather than averaged.
- Entity work. A model forms its picture of your brand from many sources. If your name collides with a better-known company — measured as name confusion rate — or your descriptions conflict across directories and media, content work alone will not fix it. Brand entity disambiguation comes first.
- What content looks like. Keyword density carries almost no weight in an AI answer; models reuse checkable facts. Pages are rewritten answer-first, with specification tables, explicit numbers and clear statements of what you are not suited for.
How to evaluate either kind of agency
Give every candidate the same brief — brand, target customers, key questions, existing content, internal resources — and compare responses on scope, not on who promises the highest position. Ask:
- Are branded and non-branded questions separated, and drawn from real purchasing situations?
- Can every number be traced to a raw answer with date, entry point and citations?
- Who reviews specifications, client names and prices before publication?
- Do you keep the content, accounts and data when the engagement ends?
- How are re-tests run, and what happens when nothing improves?
- How are impressions, clicks and qualified inquiries tracked separately?
Compare quotes on the same period and scope: one-off diagnosis and implementation, tool subscriptions, content production and re-tests listed separately. See how to choose a GEO vendor and what GEO costs and how to scope it for the full checklists.
Red flags apply to both kinds: a guaranteed ranking or “top three in AI recommendations”, a single health score in place of raw evidence, article counts presented as leads, and screenshots with no date or question set.
Which should you choose?
- A traditional SEO agency if your buyers mainly search and click, your category has clear search demand, and your site has technical or content gaps that are holding back rankings.
- An AI search agency if your buyers consult an AI assistant before shortlisting — common in B2B, professional services and export sourcing — or if a baseline shows you missing, misdescribed or confused with another company in AI answers.
- One agency that does both only if it can show AI-specific measurement: a question set, archived raw answers and a re-test cycle, not a renamed keyword report.
- Neither, yet, if you have no publishable evidence — client references, specifications, certifications. Both kinds of agency need that raw material.
Moments is a Shanghai-based GEO and AI search visibility advisory working mostly with Chinese companies, including exporters selling overseas through overseas AI lead generation. It does not promise rankings. If you want to see where you stand first, start with the free GEO audit.
Frequently asked questions
Can our existing SEO agency handle AI search too?
Possibly. Ask it the same questions you would ask a specialist: how it builds a question set, whether it archives raw AI answers with dates and platforms, how it re-tests, and how it handles entity confusion. If the answer is a renamed keyword report, it is not doing AI search work.
What should an AI search agency deliver?
A baseline built from real platform answers, a page-by-page rewrite list, entity and structured data templates, and re-test records compared against the baseline. Raw answers should be archived so you can recalculate the rates yourself.
Can an agency guarantee we appear in ChatGPT or Perplexity answers?
No. Generative systems do not expose a controllable ranking table, so a guaranteed position has no technical basis. Treat any such promise as a warning sign.
