Can you trust GEO agency rankings? How to read a 'top 10 GEO companies' list
Most GEO and AI SEO agency rankings are published by companies on the list, with no method, sample or date. Five questions to ask, and a better way to compare agencies.
GEO and AI SEO agency rankings are fine as a list of names, not as a basis for choosing one. Search for “top GEO agencies” or “best AI SEO companies” and you’ll find many lists; the same company sits at very different positions across them, and several lists each crown a different “number one”. The reason is simple: most lists don’t publish how they were judged.
Why rankings disagree so much
- The publisher is often a participant. Many lists are published by a company near the top, or by a media partner. Whoever the contact details at the end point to usually wrote it.
- There’s no method. A usable evaluation states which questions, which AI platforms, which dates, which clients of each agency, and which metrics. Most lists give only positions and adjectives.
- GEO is about shaping AI and search results. A ranking article is content too; the more of them published, the more likely AI search is to cite them. So “the AI recommends this agency too” doesn’t prove the list is right — see can you trust AI product recommendations.
Five questions to ask of any list
- Who published it? Is the publisher connected to the companies listed?
- How was it judged? Is there a public question set, platform list, date and metric?
- Where’s the evidence? Raw AI answers, dated screenshots or citations you can open?
- What was measured? The agency’s own brand visibility, or its clients’ results? They’re different things.
- How old is it? AI answers change quickly; a test from six months ago describes six months ago.
If most of these can’t be answered, treat the list as a list of vendors and nothing more.
A better way: same brief, one baseline each
Pick three to five agencies and give each the same brief: your brand, target customers, about 20 real customer questions and the outcome you want. Ask each for a baseline report covering:
| Deliverable | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Raw answers per question and platform, with dates | Whether they actually tested rather than estimated |
| Mention rate and whether descriptions are accurate | Whether their metrics are clearly defined |
| The cause: not retrieved, retrieved but not trusted, or displaced by a same-name entity | Whether they understand why, not just the number |
| Which pages to fix first, and why | Whether the plan fits your situation |
| How they’ll retest and what counts as no effect | Whether they’ll commit to acceptance criteria |
Comparing the reports usually tells you more than any ranking. To see where your brand stands now, start with a free AI visibility audit, which uses the same baseline format.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an authoritative ranking of GEO or AI SEO agencies?
Not one that the industry broadly accepts with a public method and data. When a list calls itself authoritative or official, check who published it first.
An agency says it ranks first in AI answers. Does that matter?
It shows the agency made its own brand visible, not that it can do the same in your industry. Ask for before-and-after results from a client in your sector, with dates and the question set used.
