McDonald's: a global restaurant AI platform on Google Cloud
McDonald's is adding Google Cloud edge computing to restaurants for equipment-failure prediction, AI order checks and a virtual manager. No results disclosed.
McDonald’s is deploying Google Distributed Cloud edge computing in its restaurants, with plans to use it for predicting equipment failures, checking orders with AI cameras and a generative AI “virtual manager” that handles admin work such as scheduling. Public reporting does not disclose any results.

Why it matters
Every planned use targets a routine back-of-house task (equipment upkeep, order accuracy, scheduling), and the edge computing layer comes first. What is public so far is a plan and a direction, not measured outcomes.
Case details
Background
On December 6, 2023, McDonald’s and Google Cloud announced a multi-year partnership covering hardware, data and AI technology (CIO Dive, December 7, 2023). The report noted McDonald’s goals at the time of growing to 50,000 restaurants by 2027 and expanding its loyalty program to 250 million active users.
What they did
- From 2024, Google Distributed Cloud compute and storage is being rolled out to individual restaurants: Google Cloud-managed edge servers installed on site analyze data locally and cut latency, across “thousands” of restaurants worldwide.
- Improvements to the mobile app and in-store self-order kiosks.
- Restaurants get direct access to cloud software and AI tools, including generative AI solutions. Google Cloud placed a dedicated team near McDonald’s Speedee Labs innovation center in Chicago.
- On March 6, 2025, The Spoon, citing The Wall Street Journal, reported that a technology upgrade across about 43,000 McDonald’s restaurants includes connected kitchen equipment, AI drive-thru and tools for restaurant managers. The specific plans: use edge computing to predict failures in fryers, ice cream machines and other equipment before they happen, use AI cameras to improve order accuracy, and develop a “generative AI virtual manager” to take scheduling and other admin off managers’ plates.
Results and data
The public sources give no results. None of the reports disclose time saved on scheduling, sales growth or improvement in order accuracy, and none say how many restaurants already have the technology or when rollout will finish. Global CIO Brian Rice’s description, making “tools sharper and models smarter”, is qualitative.
What to take from it
Building in-store edge compute and a data foundation before adding specific use cases is an order other chains can follow. The chosen use cases are back-office tasks (equipment maintenance, order checking, scheduling) that eat managers’ time, follow clear rules and have outcomes that are easy to verify.
Limits
Most chains lack McDonald’s restaurant count and bargaining power with cloud vendors. What is public is a plan and pilot direction with no quantifiable return, so it should not be used for ROI estimates. Companies in China copying this approach also need to account for compliance rules on in-store camera capture and data processing.
