Case details

Background

In The 2026 AEO / GEO Benchmarks Report (last updated July 6, 2026, per the page), Conductor studied 13,770 domains across 10 industries and 22 sub-industries. The AI search analysis covered 3.5 million unique prompts, 17 million AI responses and more than 100 million citations in the US market from May to September 2025. The AI Overview analysis tracked about 21.9 million Google searches from September 15 to October 12, 2025, of which about 25.11% triggered an AI Overview.

What they did

This is not a project Mayo Clinic disclosed itself; it is an observation in a third-party report. Conductor notes that Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic both maintain comprehensive “Health Library” sections. These pages work like FAQs and glossaries, so AI systems can pull authoritative, accurate answers straight from them, and the same content strategy may explain both organizations’ consistently strong organic search performance. The report also notes that healthcare is a YMYL (“Your Money or Your Life”) category, where AI models clearly favor the most expert and authoritative sources, which is where E-E-A-T signals matter.

Results and data

  • Healthcare AI citation share: mayoclinic.org ranks first, followed by clevelandclinic.org, healthline.com, goodrx.com and webmd.com.
  • Healthcare AI brand mention share: Mayo Clinic ranks first, followed by Cleveland Clinic, Pfizer, Labcorp and Baptist Health. No percentages are given.
  • Healthcare has an AI Overview trigger rate of 48.75%, the highest of the 10 industries. Organic search accounts for 42.4% of industry traffic, and AI referral traffic grew -0.34% month over month, slowing between May and September.

The report does not give Mayo’s citation count, site traffic or AI investment.

What to take from it

  • Build a Q&A-style knowledge base. Organizing expertise into clear pages by condition, symptom and term is more likely to be cited than scattered marketing articles. That is the core of answer engine optimization.
  • Authority wins in YMYL categories. In healthcare and finance, the institution’s credibility and the content’s expertise count for more than volume. Being a citation source depends on verifiable expertise.
  • SEO work is not wasted. The report finds that sites with strong SEO foundations also do well in AI search, so GEO does not mean starting over. Healthcare brands can start from GEO for healthcare.

Limits

  • The data covers the US market and English-language AI products. Other markets and AI platforms may cite differently and need their own measurement.
  • The report says “may”: the link between the ranking and the Health Library is a correlation, not proof that the library alone earned first place.
  • The report attributes the lead to both organizations’ standing as world-renowned hospital systems. Copying the content format does not confer the same trust.
