Case details
Background
SmartRent is a smart-home and property technology company; the case study was published by its agency, Single Grain. As described, SmartRent’s main problem was technical SEO. Much of its valuable content was not being crawled and indexed properly, unnecessary redirects slowed the site, it failed Google’s Core Web Vitals, pages lacked title tags, internal links were broken, mobile performance was poor, and the content structure made it hard for search engines to understand.
What they did
- Ran a full technical audit, built an indexing and redirect fix plan, and improved Core Web Vitals.
- The AEO team wrote and published content briefs in June and July targeting both organic and AI search keywords.
- Restructured content and added FAQs; delivered a new keyword mapping document, rewrote page titles and descriptions, and inserted passages written for LLMs to parse.
- Ran outreach to “top 10 solutions” style listicles to get included and earn more external citations.
Results and data
According to the case study, one month after applying Single Grain’s prioritization framework, SmartRent gained more than 100 new citations across major AI platforms. Total Google AI Overviews citations rose 50%, and citations on Gemini, ChatGPT and Perplexity went from zero to about 30. It also lists a 32.1% increase in organic demo form submissions, a 21.9% increase in key events and a 345% increase in LLM referral traffic. The study gives no absolute lead numbers or baselines, and the page title’s “200 AI Citations” does not match the “100+” in the body.
What to take from it
GEO often depends on basic SEO: pages have to be crawlable, indexed and fast before AI platforms can cite them. Third-party listicles are a source LLMs cite often, so they belong in off-site content planning.
Limits
This is a case study published by the agency itself with no baselines disclosed, so the percentage gains are hard to compare. It covers Google and English-language AI platforms. Brands targeting other markets, such as Baidu and Chinese models, need to recheck both the technical fixes and the listicle channels against those platforms’ crawling behavior.
