Case details

Background

Merchants in Yiwu International Trade City are mostly small operators, and selling abroad means producing video, images and conversations in many languages. On July 24, 2025, Yiwu Commodity City Group and Alibaba began internal testing of the “World Yiwu AI model”, inviting more than 300 companies to try it first. The model upgrades Chinagoods, the group’s digital trade services platform, and is free for every business in the market.

What they did

  • Early tools. CCTV reported in March 2025 that merchants were using tools connected to DeepSeek to make foreign-language promotional videos; bamboo and wood products merchant Fu Miaoling could record one video and generate foreign-language versions.
  • Model-based tools. A quick video maker, an “image factory” for product listing images, and an AI translator supporting real-time conversation in 116 languages. According to The Paper, by the time the Yiwu Global Digital Trade Center opened in October 2025, the model had 13 applications, including AI design, AI video creation and AI video translation.
  • Navigation and shopping. A separate project with Tencent built AI navigation and shopping guidance, covering stall navigation, product search and image-based product recognition.

Results and data

  • CCTV: video production costs down 90%, multilingual reply accuracy up to 98%, international trade dispute rate down 40%.
  • Tide News: more than 30,000 merchants use AI tools in their business, over half of them daily; merchants using AI heavily saw orders grow more than 30%; Chinagoods AI tools have been called more than 1 billion times; the image factory made listing 10 times more efficient. Merchant Wang Junwen said listing a pair of AI glasses dropped from two hours to 12 minutes.
  • The Paper: a product video used to take about a week and cost over a thousand yuan; now multilingual versions take minutes.
  • Most of these figures are self-reported by the group or merchants, and the sources do not explain how they were measured.

What to take from it

  • Free AI tools provided centrally by the market operator lower the barrier for each small merchant.
  • Start with high-frequency tasks that pay off fast: video, images and translation. Exporters weighing similar tools can see AI for B2B exporters.

Limits

The model depends on a concentrated market, a large merchant base and the platform’s accumulated data, which a single standalone company cannot easily replicate. The results have no control group, so order growth cannot be attributed entirely to AI.
