Forward deployed engineer (FDE)
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) works on site with a client to fit a product or AI capability into real workflows, combining engineering with process work.
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is an engineer who works with a client on site, fitting a product or AI capability into the client’s real workflows. The model is best known from Palantir: instead of staying at headquarters building general features, engineers embed with the client and work alongside the business teams.
What an FDE does
- Understands the business problem. Watches how the work actually runs and finds the steps worth solving with technology, where the effect can be measured.
- Connects data and builds the solution. Brings in the client’s systems and data and configures or builds something that runs, not just a slide deck.
- Feeds lessons back to the product. Problems that keep coming up across clients go back to the product team to become general capabilities.
So an FDE has to write code, work with business teams and often handle part of the project management.
Why AI projects are turning to FDEs
The general abilities of large models and AI agents are easy to demo. The hard part is connecting them to a company’s own data, permissions and processes: where the knowledge lives, who reviews the output, what happens when it goes wrong. Those questions get solved on site, which is why more AI projects use embedded or hands-on delivery. Along the way, the FDE often has to capture how experienced staff make decisions and turn that into material the AI can use.
When hiring an outside team for AI delivery, ask whether anyone will work on site, for how long, whether they deliver a running system or a plan, and who maintains it afterwards. See AI agent development for how Moments approaches delivery. Our Chinese-language FDE knowledge base collects FDE methods, playbooks and toolchains.
