Tencent Yuanbao
Tencent Yuanbao is Tencent's AI assistant, launched in 2024. It can search WeChat Official Account content as well as the web, making it key to China GEO.
Tencent Yuanbao is an AI assistant from Tencent, launched in 2024. Beyond the public web, it can search content inside Tencent’s own ecosystem, including WeChat Official Accounts, which makes it one of the standard platforms for measuring generative engine optimization (GEO) results in China.
For readers outside China: Tencent is the company behind WeChat, the messaging and content app that dominates daily digital life in mainland China. Yuanbao is to Tencent roughly what Gemini is to Google, a general-purpose assistant tied into the parent company’s ecosystem. It competes with other Chinese assistants such as ByteDance’s Doubao, Kimi and DeepSeek.
By default Yuanbao runs on Tencent’s in-house Hunyuan large language model, and it also offers other models as options. It is available as a mobile app, on the web and as a WeChat mini program.
Why it is measured separately
Most WeChat Official Account content is not open to outside crawlers, so other AI search platforms largely cannot reach it. Official Accounts are where many Chinese companies publish most of their content: announcements, case studies, thought leadership and product news.
For a Chinese brand that treats its Official Account as its main publishing channel, Yuanbao may be the only assistant that can actually read that material. It is normal for the mention rate measured on Yuanbao to differ substantially from other platforms.
That difference is useful information in itself. It shows which ecosystem the brand’s content assets are concentrated in:
- High on Yuanbao, low elsewhere: content is concentrated inside WeChat and largely invisible to the open web.
- Low on Yuanbao, higher elsewhere: the open web is covered, but WeChat content is thin or not being picked up.
For exporters, this has a practical consequence. Content that lives mainly on WeChat will not reach English-speaking buyers using ChatGPT or Perplexity. Reaching both audiences usually means publishing the same facts on the open web as well (see one-source, multi-platform distribution).
How to measure brands on Yuanbao
Use the same rules as on any other platform:
- A fixed question set, with the exact wording frozen.
- Web search on and off recorded separately.
- The sampling date recorded for every round.
- Yuanbao reported on its own, not blended into a weighted average with other platforms (see baseline and retest).
If an answer refers to a different company with the same name, count it under name confusion rate, not as a mention.
What is not known
Tencent has not published details on which sources Yuanbao searches, how it ranks them, or how WeChat ecosystem content is weighed against the public web. Any specific claim about its crawling preferences should be treated as an observation, not a fact. Patterns seen in one round of testing may change when the model or retrieval system is updated.
That uncertainty is the main reason to rely on repeated measurement rather than assumptions: test under fixed conditions, record what changed in between, and compare results over time.
Where it fits
Yuanbao is one of several assistants a China-facing brand should track, alongside Doubao and others, and alongside ChatGPT and Perplexity for companies selling abroad. Moments includes it in its China AI visibility work; see the China AI brand visibility benchmark or request a free GEO audit.
Yuanbao is a product of its operating company. It is described here only as a search environment for measurement purposes.
