AI search platform
An AI search platform answers questions conversationally and may cite source links, replacing the list of blue links as the place people get conclusions.
An AI search platform is a search-style product that answers questions directly in conversation, optionally with links to its sources, and that replaces the list of links as the place users get their conclusions.
For generative engine optimization (GEO), these platforms are where measurement and optimization actually happen. Each one has its own retrieval strategy, citation habits and preferences for certain kinds of content, so the same brand’s mention rate often varies widely from platform to platform. That is why measurements must be recorded per platform.
Major platforms in China
China’s AI assistant market is dominated by domestic products, most of which a US reader may not have used. For any company selling to Chinese buyers — or a Chinese company checking how it is described at home — these are the platforms that matter:
- Doubao (ByteDance). Draws on content from the Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) and Toutiao ecosystem, and gives relatively heavy weight to short-video and image-and-text platforms.
- Yuanbao (Tencent). Can search WeChat Official Account articles. That content is largely unreachable by other platforms, which makes Yuanbao a distinctive entry point for Chinese brand content.
- Kimi (Moonshot AI). Known for long-context processing; tends to return a fairly complete list of citations.
- DeepSeek. Known for its reasoning ability. Web search is an optional mode; without it, answers rely entirely on the model’s internal knowledge. In that mode, how a brand is perceived depends on training data, and changes to your website cannot affect it in the short term.
- ERNIE Bot / Baidu AI Search. Tightly coupled to Baidu’s search index, so traditional SEO assets carry over relatively directly.
Major platforms outside China
- ChatGPT (including its search mode)
- Perplexity
- Google AI Overviews
- Claude
Perplexity annotates its answers sentence by sentence with citation sources by default, which makes it one of the easiest platforms for observing who gets cited.
Why the platform differences matter for measurement
Data from a single platform cannot stand in for the whole picture. A brand that appears often on ChatGPT may be absent on Doubao, and vice versa. A comparable measurement setup holds three things constant:
- a fixed question set;
- a fixed list of platforms;
- a fixed sampling schedule.
Run the full set each round. Changing any of the three means you are starting a new baseline (see baseline retest).
Also note that web-connected and offline answers are two different modes. An offline answer reflects only what the model learned during training; a web-connected answer depends on what the platform retrieves at that moment. Results from the two modes should never be combined into one number.
What this means in practice
- Report per platform. A single blended “AI visibility score” hides the differences that tell you where to act.
- Match platforms to your buyers. A US SaaS company might prioritize ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews; an exporter selling into China, or a Chinese brand, will need Doubao, Yuanbao, Kimi and DeepSeek in the set. See AI platform differences for more.
- Treat “platform preferences” as hypotheses. None of these companies publish their retrieval or ranking rules. Observed tendencies are useful starting points, not facts.
For a structured review of how your brand shows up across these platforms, see the free GEO audit.
